Pahiatua people have joined a campaign reinforcing the message that family violence is not acceptable.
A series of unique billboards is being erected in North Island towns and cities under the auspices of Central District police, the inspiration for the project coming from an Ohakune iwi.
Project co-ordinator Detective Inspector Chris Bensemann said the aim was to get locals involved in spreading the message and also to target passing motorists. He said people driving through Pahiatua and other towns involved in the project would get the "it's not okay" message consistently.
Apart from Pahiatua, other towns and cities getting the signs would be New Plymouth, Stratford, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Feilding, Bulls, Taumarunui, Patea, Taihape, Woodville, Dannevirke and Waiouru.
In the year ended March 31, Central District police received an average of 542 reports of family violence a month, or 18 calls a day.
