KEY POINTS:
A vintage biplane will have to be hoisted out of some trees after crashing in Masterton this morning.
Constable Gillian Flower told NZPA the engine of the Avro 504k cut out just after taking off at Hood Aerodome and crashed into the top of six metre tall trees at the end of the runway, about 10.30am.
The pilot, who was an experienced flyer, managed to climb out of the plane to safety.
He was not injured, Mrs Flower said.
The plane was stuck in the trees and would have to be extricated with a crane, she said.
The Civil Aviation Authority was investigating the cause of the crash.
