Douglas Villa is at the head of the Capital third division football table after the first round of matches on Saturday, even if only because of their superior goal difference.
The 4-1 win secured by Douglas Villa over Petone was the most comfortable in the five third division matches played, with Island Bay beating North Wellington 2-0, Waikanae downing Karori Cougars 2-1, Seatoun edging Kapiti Coast United 2-1 and Lower Hutt City and Brooklyn Northern drawing 1-1.
Wairarapa United seconds were on the end of a 3-1 defeat by Petone in their opening match in the Capital fourth division competition.
In other games in that division, University beat Eastbourne 4-2, Island Bay United beat Wainuiomata 2-1, Island Bay HHH shaded Naenae 2-1 and Lower Hutt thumped Stokes Valley 5-0.
Results have also been confirmed for the opening series in the Central League competition on Easter Friday. They were: Palmerston North Marist 2, Wairarapa United 0; Napier City Rovers 4, Taranaki 2; Tawa 3, Western Suburbs 1; Olympic 4, Lower Hutt City 1; Miramar 1, Petone 0.
All three Wairarapa-based teams play at home this Saturday, with Wairarapa United and Olympic meeting in a Central League match at Hullena Park at 2.30pm. The draw for the Capital competitions is yet to be released but Douglas Villa will play at Park Sports No2 at 2.30pm and Wairarapa United seconds at Park Sports No1 at 12.30pm.
Also starting on Saturday will be matches in the Wairarapa championship. The draw is: White Swan Greytown v Laser Electrical Douglas Villa, Greytown Memorial at 12.30pm; Wairarapa Funeral Services v A1 Homes, Park Sports 1 at 12.30pm; McAuleys Masterton v Carterton Skulls, Hullena Park No2 at 1pm; Masterton Gladstone Lions v Carterton Social, Makoura College at 1.30pm; Sports Arena Carterton Wanderers v Farmlands Masterton Presidents, Howard Booth No1 at 2.30pm; Redbacks v Trevs Sports Masterton, Howard Booth No3 at 2.30pm; Evergreens v Douglas Villa Magpies, Hullena Park No1 at 12.30pm.
