Douglas Villa have made a flying start towards achieving their primary objective in this season's Capital Football's third division competition - promotion to second division for 2012.
With just two matches completed it is, of course, far too early to be lauding Douglas Villa as potential third division champions but a couple of convincing wins are clearly a step in the right direction.
First they beat Island Bay 3-1 and then on Saturday they demolished Marist (Wellington)
5-2.
Joint coach Ricky Riddell, who shares the coaching duties with Dean Kerr, was delighted with the clinical manner in which his side disposed of Marist.
Determined to make a positive statement in the opening stanzas they did exactly that to lead 3-0 at halftime and while Marist had a brief period of ascendancy in the second spell the ship was quickly steadied and Douglas Villa finished the stronger of the two.
Striker Troy Burling scored two of the Douglas Villa goals with others going to Joel Vatselias, Daniel Delara-Bell and Micky Kempson.
Burling, a regular at division one level in past years, was a standout for Douglas Villa along with Tim Woodcock, Kempson and hardy defender Nathan Cottle.
On exposed form Douglas Villa should continue on their winning ways when they travel over the hill to play Lower Hutt this coming Saturday but Riddell is mindful of the fact that Lower Hutt , who drew 0-0 with Island Bay in their latest appearance, were something of a "bogey" team for Douglas Villa last season and can't be underrated.
"We probably should win but we won't be taking anything for granted, they [Lower Hutt] have got under the guard before and we don't want that to happen again.".
Meanwhile, Greytown White Swan went on a scoring spree against Evergreens when matches in the Wairarapa football championship continued on Saturday. The southerners won 12-0 and have now scored 18 goals in their two games with none against.
Results from Saturday were:
Greytown A1 Homes 2, Carterton Redbacks 1; Douglas Villa Good Beginnings 5, Masterton Farmlands Presidents 1; Carterton Skulls 7, Douglas Villa Wairarapa Funeral Services 1; Masterton McAuleys 2, Douglas Villa Has Beens 0; Masterton Trevs Sports Athletic 5, Masterton-Gladstone Lions 0; Douglas Villa laser Electrical 2, Masterton Pacific United 1; Greytown White Swan 12, Evergreens 0.
