The Government has a liability for the leaky homes and should share responsibility for compensating victims, Auckland City Mayor John Banks has said.
Mr Banks told nzherald.co.nz the Government had a "moral liability" for the problem because it set up the statutory framework and regulatory detail under which leaky homes were built.
Mr Banks said local government faced a crippling $2 billion liability over the next 10 years and needed the Government's help.
