Victoria Square restoration to begin

The restoration of Victoria Square in Christchurch will begin at the end of the month.

The central city landmark, formerly known as Market Square, will be fenced off on February 27 so work can begin.

It will include removing and replacing thousands of pavers damaged in the February 22, 2011, earthquake, and a new stormwater system, reports Christchurch Star.

Otakaro Ltd and City Care will add new seating, tables, water fountains, rubbish bins, bicycle rails, lighting, and a punt stop next to the river opposite the Town Hall.

The Bowker Fountain will be temporarily removed to upgrade its mechanics and pipes and a new cycle lane and wider footpath will be installed on Colombo St to make it safer for people entering the square.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority initially planned to spend $7 million changing and revamping the square, but scrapped its plans after a public outcry.

During the work, there will be no access onto Colombo St from Oxford Tce and no parking along Colombo St, between Kilmore and Armagh Sts.

The restoration is expected to be completed by March next year.
