KEY POINTS:
A man who was stabbed five times in the upper body in central Auckland at midday yesterday has not made a complaint to the police.
A toilet block where the stabbing was believed to have occurred and a separate grass area in Aotea Square where the man was discovered were cordoned off for two hours after the attack.
Police said it was not random and there was no threat to public safety from those responsible.
Detective Sergeant Jason McIntosh said the man was interviewed at Auckland City Hospital yesterday but declined to make a complaint.
He suffered five laceration-type wounds, the deepest about 5cm, which are believed to have been inflicted with a knife.
Mr McIntosh said officers had conducted a scene examination and were interviewing witnesses but there was little more they could do without a complaint.
Auckland City Council staff member Gareth Kier said he was shocked to find the man as he went out for lunch. His colleague Jamie Wilson tended to the victim's wounds with a first aid kit, stemming the bleeding until St John paramedics arrived.
"There was a lot of blood on his shirt. He said he had three stab wounds and he was struggling to breathe. He kept saying he was in a lot of pain."
