Police say they are not looking for anyone else over a South Auckland house fire that left one person dead and another critically injured.
A woman, lying in a pool of blood with head injuries, was pulled from the blazing house on Roscommon Rd, Clendon, on Sunday afternoon.
A body believed to be that of a man was found in an upstairs room.
Counties Manukau police spokeswoman Angeline Barlow said the fire might have been deliberately lit and the death was being treated as suspicious.
Ms Barlow said police had still to confirm the identity and gender of the dead person.
She said the woman in hospital was in a stable but critical condition.
Police were also trying to identify the "good Samaritans" who helped to pull the woman from the fire.
Firefighters were alerted about 2.30pm and witnesses have reported hearing loud explosions.
Shay Kingham was driving home when he came across the fire and made several attempts to check for occupants before finding the woman.
"Her eyes were open but she couldn't speak at all," he said.
"I tried talking to her to see if there was anyone else in the house, asking her to squeeze my hand if there was anyone else, but she couldn't do anything.
"I called out to another guy and we dragged her out of the house and on to the front lawn. That's when the firefighters started arriving."
The body of the person found dead upstairs was believed to be the partner of the survivor.
Neighbours said the two people who lived in the house, an Asian woman and a European man, often fought.
"She was really nice but [the man] I always found to be a bit grumpy," said neighbour Sesilia Faaetete.
"They were always arguing, shouting, any time of the day."
