Victim of fatal Canterbury crash named

The family of a woman who died in a four vehicle crash over the Queen's Birthday weekend are "devastated" by her death.

Susan Mary McLeod, 58, from Kaiapoi, was a pillion passenger of a motorcycle when it crashed into the back of a car waiting to turn right at the junction of State Highway 1 and Harleston Rd on May 31. She died at the scene.

The rider of the bike suffered serious leg injuries. He was now in a stable condition in Christchurch Hospital, police said.

Both Ms McLeod and the rider were thrown from the bike in the crash.

It was believed Ms McLeod was hit by an oncoming car, and then flung underneath a van.

Her family were said to be "devastated at their sudden loss", and were being comforted by police and Victim Support, police said in a statement today.

Investigations into the crash were continuing.

Ms McLeod's death has been referred to the coroner.

The Queen's Birthday weekend road toll was five.
