Police say a South Auckland man killed during a church function on Saturday night was minding his own business before being attacked by several people.
He was Pilikitisua Neru, 46, a tyre fitter who is survived by his partner and their three children, aged 21, 17 and 12.
Mr Neru, who was known as Pili to his friends, was at the Nga Tapuwae Community Centre in Buckland Rd, Mangere, on Saturday night when he suffered head injuries. An ambulance was called at 10pm and he was taken to hospital where he died on Wednesday afternoon.
"This is a family man who died in tragic circumstances," said Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Middleton, who is heading the homicide inquiry.
He said Mr Neru was not involved in a fight before this death.
