A "vicious and unprovoked" dog attack in Whakatane has left a man with severe damage to his groin area.
The attack occurred at 4pm yesterday when the man was walking his own dog in the Rose Garden area adjacent to the Warren Cole Walkway.
A dark brown pitbull or sharpei type breed covered in mange has then lunged at the man nether regions, inflicting serious injuries.
By the time the Dog Ranger responded the dog had run off and is still on the loose.
The man remains in hospital with serious injuries.
