KEY POINTS:
Victoria University is the latest to be hit by a campaign aimed at stealing staff and student login details.
A number of South Island universities have been targeted by computer hackers known as "Spear Phishers" who have mainly created problems in overseas universities.
Victoria University E-government expert Miriam Lips says the problem is becoming more common in New Zealand. She says a number of staff at Victoria have been targeted by emails asking for their login details and passwords.
She says it is important when universities become aware such a campaign is going on, they immediately warn staff.
Ms Lips says there is not enough awareness of the issue yet, as people are often very trusting of emails they perceive to be from a valid organisation
