Vets' new gadget takes hassle out of washing Rover

BATH TIME: Vet Services mascot Rosie the bull dog gets a bath in the new K9000 self-service dog wash machine.

Vet Services Wairarapa can now add dog bathing to its list of services, with its new DIY machine going down a (doggy) treat with customers.

The practice has installed a K9000, a coin-operated, self-service dog wash system, outside its Masterton premises -- allowing dog-owners to hose down and shampoo their filthy pooches while passing through town.

The K9000 system works by the owner placing the dog in the attached trough area, and depositing coins or notes to activate warm water (via shower head), shampoo, conditioner, flea treatment, disinfectant and a blowdrier, which they can select by turning a dial.

Practice manager Stuart Bruere said he got the idea after hearing a veterinary practice in New Plymouth had great success with their K9000.

Shortly afterwards, he surveyed clients on via Facebook about their methods of dog washing -- with people confessing to all kinds of creative and time-consuming procedures.

"If you've got a big dog, washing them is a particular hassle," Dr Bruere said.

"People were saying they'd have to hose them on the back lawn, or put towels all over the bathroom which would just end up in a mess.

"One woman said she'd put her togs on, and get in the shower with the dog."

Sensing customers needed a easier solution, he began researching the K9000 -- developed in Australia and distributed from Christchurch, with about 30 machines set up in New Zealand.

Since the Masterton version was installed two weeks ago, Dr Bruere said feedback has been "very positive" -- with its introductory post on Facebook gaining over 1000 views.

He said it has been well-used so far by dogs of all shapes and sizes, from small bull dogs, to labradors, to German Shepherds.

"We've stopped and talked to several people, and they say it's just so easy.

"The machine itself looks really colourful, which people like -- and the dog can sit there and enjoy the warm water, and go away smelling like apple-scented conditioner."

Dr Bruere said the dog wash is another feather in the cap for the practice, which already has a range of veterinary services for companions and farm animals, pet grooming and a large retail space.

"It's another way Vet Services can connect with the public."

The K9000 is available to customers 24/7, and costs $10 for a 10-minute wash. Tokens for the machine can be bought from the practice during business hours.
