These kittens were first off _ or should that be on _ the block for the 11th Neuterathon run by Dr Heidi Ward-McGrath, (pictured) and her team at Vetcare in Masterton.
Between now and March 19, the clinic is offering free de-sexing for tomcats, as well as speying and vaccinations at half price. Dr Ward-McGrath hoped to de-sex between 300 and 500 felines this year and top last year's total of 400.
She was also keen to see a well-endowed tomcat set a new record in the Neuterathon's tongue-in-cheek Biggest Balls Competition, with the winner receiving a new cat scratcher.
Runners-up would get $50 worth of Mills catfood and other products were up for grabs in spot prizes.
A burly tomcat called Tui won last year's contest with a pair of vital statistics weighing in at an impressive 2.8g _ but that came nowhere near title-holder Blackjack's 3.2g assets that were chopped a few years ago.
''The average weight is about 1.1 or 1.2g, so you could say that was pretty impressive,'' she said.
She said the promotion was part of Vetcare's ongoing contribution toward animal welfare in Wairarapa, and had won the endorsement of Greater Wellington Regional Council for helping to protect the region's native bird population.
