KEY POINTS:
The editor of a newspaper has apologised to the grandmother of former TV star Tony Veitch after a complaint that one of his reporters misled her way into her home.
Two family members allowed the Timaru Herald reporter into Cath Veitch's home last week, thinking she was a caregiver. Only after they left did the reporter identify herself to Mrs Veitch, 88.
Herald editor Dave Wood hand-wrote an apology to Mrs Veitch, saying the intention was to give her an opportunity to comment on Tony's situation. It is understood the Veitch family is furious about the reporter's actions and a family friend has laid a complaint to the Press Council.
Mrs Veitch has a heart condition and lives on her own.
