The crash between a vehicle and a freight train last night occurred at a level crossing controlled by lights only at the intersection of Hunter and Sedgebrook roads in Patumahoe.
Two occupants of the vehicle suffered serious injuries in the crash just after 8.30pm.
Northern fire communications shift manager Scott Osmond said fire crews cut the pair out of the smashed car. They were taken to Middlemore Hospital by Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
Police said the Serious Crash Unit and police photography personnel were at the site last night and the cause of the crash was being investigated.
Victim support personnel were helping the train driver and witnesses.
