A car went into a Central Otago lake this evening and sank, police say.
Inspector Peter Hegarty, of the police southern communication centre, said one person escaped the vehicle, which was now fully submerged in Lake Dunstan, but police were still trying to establish whether anyone else was inside.
The incident occurred about 6.30pm some 3 or 4km north of the Clyde Dam off State Highway 8.
Hegarty said the person who escaped the car had been picked up by a boat.
