KEY POINTS:
The Government will put about $8 million towards building research capacity in nursing, veterinary science and information technology over the next two years, Tertiary Education Minister Michael Cullen says.
Dr Cullen said Auckland and Waikato universities would jointly receive $3.2 million to build an information and communication technology "research community", from the latest round of the Building Research Capability in Strategically Relevant Areas Fund.
Auckland University would also get a separate award of $2.7 million from the fund for a nursing and health consortium aimed at helping nursing play a greater role in academic research.
Massey University would get $2 million to boost veterinary science research capability, he said.
