More than 100 Auckland children yesterday became the proud owners of new bikes courtesy of Variety - The Children's Charity.
The Bikes For Kids tour began by handing cycles to 117 kids.
The children, like 8-year-old Ryan Singh (pictured) from Onepoto Primary, were nominated by parents, teachers or community workers.
Variety events manager Jodi Preston-Thomas said the children, all aged between 7 and 9, were nominated because they were either role models in their schools, had been through tough times, or their families weren't in a position to buy one for them.
The tour is in Rodney today before heading towards the Far North and then travelling south to Dunedin and Christchurch. Ms Preston-Thomas said some of the children got a big surprise when they saw the bikes.
"Some of them don't realise they can walk away with them."
During the tour, 450 bikes will be given away.
