KEY POINTS:
Vandals attacked the site set up for the Anzac Day Dawn Service in Patea in South Taranaki overnight, smashing and knocking down crosses arranged around the town's cenotaph.
Patea Returned Services Association president Ken Howe said six or seven of the 80 crosses had been smashed, with a number pulled out of ground.
"The first people to get there put some of them back in, and the broken pieces were handed to the police," he told NZPA.
