The return to competitive swimming of national age group representative Neil Van Wijk was a highlight of Saturday's session at the Wairarapa open short course championships held at the Genesis Recreation Centre pool in Masterton.
Van Wijk from the Carterton club had only a limited preparation leading into the boys 16yrs
and over 100m breaststroke but showed why he has been rated one of the country's most promising breaststrokers by clocking a respectable time of 1min 8.03secs and having more than 8secs to spare from his nearest rival, Masterton's Isaac Foote.
That defeat did not, however, stop Foote from being the dominant performer in the 16yrs and over boys section. He won several titles over various strokes and various distances to follow on the fine form he showed during the recent national tri series tour.
Foote was by no means though the only swimmer to win multiple titles, Greytown's Bella Biggs, Carterton's Talia Hullena and Kendall Peterson and Masterton's Ben Ruback were others who consistently featured prominently in the results.
One name which was missing from the winner's circle was Charlotte Pope of Carterton who after grabbing seven titles at the Wellington long course championships seemed destined for another hugely successful meet.
Pope had the misfortune to injure a shoulder while contesting the 1500m finals on Wednesday night and while she still managed to limp home in second place there she had to scratch from all events planned for this weekend.,Hopes are she will back to peak form by the time of the national age group championships on early March.
This year's Wairarapa open championships also doubled as the 50th anniversary celebrations marking Wairarapa's becoming an independent centre with special guests including former Olympian and world championship gold medallist Jonathan Winter, now coaching with the United club in Auckland. His early swimming education came through the Featherston and Carterton clubs.
