The driver of a van which smashed head-on into a car yesterday morning remains in a serious condition in hospital.
The car and van collided on State Highway One near Kawakawa in the Bay of Islands, killing the elderly driver of the car and a middle-aged woman passenger in the van.
Four other passengers in the van, including two children aged about 10, were also taken to hospital.
A family spokeswoman for the driver of the van says he is doing alright.
She says the family wish to keep all details about his condition private.
