A ute driver has been helicoptered to hospital with life-threatening injuries after their vehicle collided with a truck on State Highway 2 this afternoon.
The crash happened around 4.19pm on the corner of Maxwell Rd in Maramarua, outside the Pink Pig Cafe.
SH2 is closed in both directions between Mangatawhiri and the intersection of SH25 while police investigate the cause of the accident. Detours are in place.
Northern fire communications shift manager Scott Osmond said the driver of the ute was initially trapped in the vehicle. Brigades from Maramarua and Mangatangi attended the incident and freed the person from the ute.
The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter took the injured person to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition, a helicopter spokesperson said.
