An American fugitive arrested in New Plymouth for importing child pornography and secretly filming a woman naked in her bathroom is to be deported back to the US today.
Anthony Orazio, 30, faces charges in New Zealand and the US, including an indecent assault charge dating back to 2007, 3 News reported.
In an unusual move, the Crown yesterday sought bail in the Wellington District Court for Orazio, saying the charges he faced in the US were more serious than those he faced in New Zealand.
Orazio's lawyer argued the bail application was an abuse of process designed to facilitate his client's removal from New Zealand.
Judge David Ongley said it was not a breach of legal principles and he granted bail.
Orazio could return to NZ to face charges here.
