A large part of Upper Hutt has been cordoned off following an armed incident this afternoon.
Residents around Upper Hutt College and Fergusson Intermediate, in the Fergusson Drive, Moonshine Road and Merton Street area, were urged to stay indoors and people trying to get home were asked to stay away until the situation was resolved, a police central communications spokeswoman said.
Police and armed offenders were called to the area following an incident involving a firearm about 4.45pm.
It was believed one person was involved, but the spokeswoman would not confirm that.
It did not appear anyone had been injured so far, she said.
