Police have charged a man with assault after the death of a 26-year-old father of two yesterday afternoon.
The man, who police have named as Kane Temarama, was left critically hurt with head injuries and on life support in Wellington Hospital after being attacked in Upper Hutt early on Sunday morning.
Mr Temarama had left a bar and was walking along Main St around 1am when he was set upon.
Life support was turned off in the early afternoon and Mr Temarama died at 4.10pm, with family present.
The man accused of assaulting the victim will appear in Upper Hutt District Court today.
Detective Inspector Darrin Thomson said police would consider further charges depending on the results of a post-mortem examination.
Mr Thomson appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
