An 84-year-old Frenchman was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital yesterday afternoon following a collision on State highway 7 at Garveys Creek Rd, near Crushington, east of Reefton.
Police said the driver of a rental car heading towards Reefton suddenly did a U-turn "in an unsuitable location" in front of a following vehicle driven by an Inangahua resident, who was left with nowhere to go and had to slam on their brakes.
NZCC Rescue Helicopter base manager Angus Taylor said the elderly man, who was a passenger in the rental vehicle, suffered arm injuries requiring surgery, and injuries to the upper body. No one else was injured.
