Rotorua police say they believe they know the identity of the gunman who shot another man in the face following a road rage incident in the city.
Police yesterday searched scrubland near Rotorua after discovering a white Subaru stationwagon the gunman had been driving.
It is believed he became enraged when a car driven by the victim got too close to his vehicle last Thursday.
He stopped and approached the other driver, and shot him twice, in the face and arm, with a high powered air pistol.
The 32-year-old victim and shooter were not known to each other.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Loper said today that they believed they knew the gunman who may be "unpredictable" because of his drugs use.
He said the shot man was very lucky his injuries were not a lot more serious. He was treated in hospital and discharged.
The gunman was described as of solid to fat build, was bald, and aged 40 to 50. He had a goatee beard and was about 1.75m tall.
Mr Loper appealed to anyone with information about the wanted man to contact them.
