KEY POINTS:
An unlicensed 15-year-old girl was behind the wheel of a campervan which collided with a car killing a 14-year-old girl yesterday, police say.
Cheyanne Marie Carter was killed when the campervan in which she was a passenger collided with an oncoming car on State Highway 30, at Awakeri, 17km southwest of Whakatane, about 10.40am.
"The driver of the campervan has been distracted while driving and as a result the vehicle crossed the centre line into the path of an oncoming vehicle," Sergeant Ray Wylie said.
Cheyanne, from Awakeri, died at the scene, while the drivers of both vehicles suffered minor injuries.
Police said it had been established the 15-year-old had been driving the campervan, but a Whakatane police serious crash team was still investigating the cause of the accident.
