The Christchurch School of Medicine is under investigation after reports researchers may be developing genetically modified organisms without legal approval.
The Environmental Risk Management Authority says the research involves the use of e.coli bacteria and DNA material from a number of native species.
Spokeswoman Karen Cronin says it appears the tests aim to improve scientific understanding of the evolutionary process of genes that make proteins in certain animal species.
She says ERMA's main concern is that the work may have been going on without approval, rather than a breach of containment.
However, Karen Cronin says ERMA regards the issue as serious.
Research is on hold while the investigation is being conducted.
