A function to be attended by Governor-General Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mateparae will go ahead at Canterbury University this evening despite a threat that led to part of the campus being evacuated this afternoon.
Police told students and staff in the university's James Hight building and library to evacuate and take all personal belongings with them, a university spokeswoman said in a statement.
Staff were told the building was likely to remain closed for the rest of the day.
"Police have emphasised to us that they are taking a precautionary approach. No other areas on campus are affected. All teaching and other activities on campus will continue as normal.''
Police spokesman Stephen Hill wouldn't give details of the threat but said the James Hight building and the library were the target of a "non-specific'' threat.
