Wairarapa United's 4-2 defeat of Wellington United on Saturday did nothing to boost their prospects of winning their first Central League title.
While the win enabled them to hold down third place on the points table with 20 points (from 11 games) the two sides ahead of them, Miramar Rangers and Wellington Olympic, tasted success as well. Miramar Rangers thrashed Upper Hutt City 6-2 to take their points tally to 30 from 12 games while Olympic were given a fright by cellar-dwellers Tawa, winning 4-3 to take their points from 11 games to 28.
The full competition table is: Miramar Rangers 30, Wellington Olympic 28, Wairarapa United 20, Western Suburbs 20, Napier City Rovers 16, Lower Hutt City 14, Upper Hutt City 14, Petone 13, Wellington United 4 and Tawa 1.
Douglas Villa went on a goal-scoring spree in their Capital Football second division fixture with Tawa Bulldogs in Masterton on Saturday, winning by 9-0 and keeping themselves well in contention for some silverware at the end of the season.
