Wairarapa United showed pleasing signs of improvement in beating Palmerston North Marist 3-1 in their Central League football match played in Palmerston North on Saturday.
Coach Adam Cowan said the effort was a "definite step up" from the previous weekend when they lost 2-1 to Lower Hutt City.
"It probably took us about 30 minutes to really get into the swing of things and from then on we were pretty much in control," Cowan said.
"Obviously there is still a lot of work to do but at least we're heading along in the right direction."
Pita Rabo, Campbell Banks and Seule Soromon were the goal scorers for Wairarapa United, which led 1-0 at halftime and had a clear edge in both territory and possession in the second spell.
Rabo was a standout on attack, making several threatening bursts, and the return of Ian Sandbrook added solidity to the midfield.
Right back Scott Robson was always solid on defence for Wairarapa United as were Nathan Cooksley and goalkeeper Matt Borren, who pulled off a couple of fine saves.
Wairarapa United's next game is against star-studded Olympic at Masterton's Queen Elizabeth Park Oval this coming Sunday with Cowan admitting it will be a huge test for his squad.
"That's a big one for us ... we'll have to be right on our mettle to test them," he said.
