Wairarapa United have fashioned a remarkable record in the Capital Soccer 12th grade promo competition this season, winning 11 of their matches there and earning promotion to the Super Six series as a consequence.
Consisting entirely of players from Carterton and Featherston and including one female, Kirsten Vos, in their line-up Wairarapa United's dominance is illustrated by them having scored 42 goals and conceding just three. They have beaten Onslow 3-2, Olympic 1-0, Upper Hutt 7-0, Kapiti United 5-0, Western Suburbs 6-0, Lower Hutt 5-0, Stop Out 2-0, Tawa 4-1, Miramar Rangers 6-0 and Karori 3-0 and won by default from Wainuiomata.
Tony Simpson is the leading goal scorer with eight while Max Maybury has seven and Chris Cox five but most of the players, who are aged between 9 and 11, have managed to get themselves on the scorecard.
Manager Darren Fryer said Wairarapa United's record might well have been even more impressive had the players kept the pressure on all the way through some of their games.
"There have been matches where we've dominated to the extent we've relaxed and taken the foot off the throat" he said.
Fryer is anticipating much tougher assignments, however, for Wairarapa United in the Super Six which sees the top two promo sides joining together with the bottom four premier division teams..
Whoever makes the top four in that competition will play at the top level next season and Fryer says that has become the main objective for a Wairarapa United. squad which will stay pretty much intact for 2009.
