Wairarapa United have solved the problem which threatened to hamper their Central League football campaign this year.
The loss of last season's regular goalkeeper Richard Gillespie left a hole which was proving difficult to fill but that changed yesterday with the news YoungHeart Manawatu national league custodian Matt Borren had been signed to play for them.
It won't, of course, be the first time Borren has played for Wairarapa United as he was part of their premier team three seasons ago but according to coach Phil Keinzley he is a lot more assured in his keeping now.
"Quite frankly, he's probably the form player in the Manawatu side. He's been their shining light in game after game," Keinzley said.
Borren's signing comes just a day after Keinzley announced three high-profile "imports" for the Wairarapa United squad, national under-20 striker Dale Higham, Fijian midfielder Valerio Nawatu and Somalian striker Faisal Salad.
Meanwhile, Keinzley could name promising Wairarapa College player Mark Hemi in the starting line-up for United's Hilton Petone Cup match against Tawa at Petone on Sunday.
Wairarapa United will be without several first-string players and Hemi has impressed enough in training to suggest he could be worth a start in the midfield.
The Wairarapa United team is: Brendon Watt, Carl Shailer, Waisake Sabatu, Pablo Moya, Thomas Hemi, Aaron Spierling, Seule Soromon, Miroslav Tvaroh, Mark Hemi, Sakeo Valevou, Campbell Banks. Subs: Ben Ravenwood, Ben Wilton, Nick Keinzley.
