Getting greater width into their attacking play will be a major objective for Anderson Meats Wairarapa United, in the last of their pre-season soccer matches to be played at Howard Booth Park, Carterton tomorrow.
Coach Phil Keinzley believes his side have been concentrating too much in previous warm-up games on attacking through the middle of the field, and wants them to spread the ball wider so that the opposition defences are more easily opened up.
"At the level we are playing now opposing teams are very structured defensively, and we need to stretch them to the point where gaps start to appear," he said. "Moving the ball wider will help do that, as well as give us the chance to utilise the pace and flair we have out there."
Keinzley is keen too to see Wairarapa United show more patience when they are in control of possession, even if it sometimes means transferring the ball backwards to the goalkeeper, before getting any momentum into their attacks.
"We have to be aware of just how crucial possession is and how best to protect it," he said. "The fewer 50-50 situations we get ourselves into the better??..patience can often avoid that."
Keinzley is anticipating a tough test from Naenae, who were in the Capital first division competition with Wairarapa United last season, with Wairarapa United ending up first and securing promotion to premier division for 2006, and Naenae ending up third and remaining in first division.
Significant in Naenae's failure to earn promotion was the two losses they suffered to Wairarapa United, and while victory tomorrow won't change their current status, Naenae would obviously take special satisfaction from it. Kick off is at 1pm
