Suggest to Wairarapa United men's soccer coach Phil Keinzley that a loss to Olympic in their Capital division one competition match at Howard Booth Park, Carterton tomorrow might be a blessing in disguise and he is quick to disagree.
While readily conceding the best is still to be seen of his side despite their unbeaten record Keinzley isn't keen for them to suffer what is often the ultimate "wake up call".
This is because Wairarapa United are on exactly the same number of competition points as Western Suburbs and would almost certainly drop below them should they lose.
Which in turn could seriously threaten their chances of winning automatic promotion to the Capital premier league, something which goes to the first division title holders.
"Promotion to the premier league in the prime objective for us and we need to keep winning for that to happen", Keinzley said. "Losing is one habit we don't want to get into.".
The Wairarapa United coach also dismisses any talk which suggests Olympic will be easy beats
He said their current place on the competition tale- sixth and 10 points behind Wairarapa United- belies their ability.
Rather he emphasises the fact that while they have won just two of their six games they have been very competitive in all of them, something evidenced by statistics which show they have scored 14 goals while conceding 17.
"They have worried the hell out of some very good sides and you can bet they'll be fired up for us," Keinzley said. "The prospect of knocking off the top team is sure to bring out the best in them."
At the time these notes were penned doubts still existed over the availability of captain Murray Burling, fullback Paul Watkinson and goalkeeper Charles Kendall for Wairarapa United.
All have been on the injured list and their absence would be felt on defence with Burling being the steadying influence in the centre of the midfield and Watkinson and Kendall just as influential a little further back.
"We're fortunate to have the depth to cover these sort of things but when you take three experienced players out in one go it has to hurt, doesn't it?" Keinzley said.
Even if they happened to be missing their three key defenders Keinzley is confident though that Wairarapa United will l field a side capable of sustaining their unbeaten record.
He says the firepower in their attack should give them a winning advantage, particularly if they were given space in which to move.
"We have a number of players who can turn half-chances into goals and that's a bonus most other teams don't have," he said.
