Wairarapa United have given themselves a cushion at the top of the central league football points table.
Saturday's 2-1 win over Western Suburbs, the team sharing the lead with them going into the latest series of matches, has shot them to a three-point advantage.
Wairarapa United, with 15 points, are one whole win ahead of Miramar Rangers and Wests who are both sitting on 12 points. Then come Olympic and Lower Hutt City 10, Petone and Tawa 7, Maycenvale 6, Palmerston North Marist and Napier City Rovers 3.
The situation is a far cry from the fate which befell Wairarapa United 12 months ago.
Then they started so slowly that within the first six weeks they were out of the reckoning for the major spoils.
That they even ended up third represented a considerable achievement considering the ground they lost so early in the piece.
Ironically the only loss this season was suffered in their first game against Lower Hutt City when long-time coach Phil Keinzley was calling the shots.
Keinzley then left on an overseas holiday and senior players Adam Cowan and Pita Rabo took over the reins, supposedly on a temporary basis, and have had extraordinary success in their new role, guiding Wairarapa United to five consecutive wins.
There is always the possibility, of course, that Cowan and Rabo will remain as coaches even when Keinzley returns in a fortnight's time.
He only made himself available at the start of this season because nobody else was prepared to do the job.
At that time it was of a case of Keinzley continuing or Wairarapa United being forced to withdraw from the central league series. Now that things are going along so well it would be no surprise if Keinzley chose to move into a managerial position and left Cowan and Rabo in charge.
This coming weekend gives Wairarapa United a royal opportunity to consolidate, and perhaps, even build their lead. They are away to Tawa who were on the end of a 2-0 beating by Petone on Saturday.
Considering Wairarapa United beat Petone 5-1 on Easter Monday that should augur well for them
although it's already become obvious that form, and results, in this central league series can change quite dramatically from week to week.
In other games this weekend Miramar Rangers will play Petone, Lower Hutt City will clash with Olympic, Palmerston North Marist will meet Wests and Maycenvale will play Napier City Rovers.
The Wairarapa United seconds are also shaping well in the Capital fourth division competition.
They have won four of their five games there, including a 3-2 defeat of the Tawa Devilz, and sit on 12 points, just one in arrears of leaders Karori Cougars and equal with Wainuiomata. Tawa Devilz have 7 points, LH Ancient Ones and Island Bay HHH 6, Island Bay United 5 and University Scarfies 5, Island Bay Massey 2 and Brooklyn Northern United 1.
Douglas Villa are in a five-way tie in second position in the Capital third division after their 1-1 draw with Karori Barcodes on Saturday. Petone Armanis lead the way with 13 points while Douglas Villa, Lower Hutt City. Paekakariki, Island Bay United and Karori Barcodes all have 7. Then come North Wellington 6, Marist 5, Petone 4 and Kapiti Coast United 1.
