The "butchering" of several prime scoring chances cost Wairarapa United dearly in their Capital Soccer premier division soccer match with Island Bay United at the Pugh Sports Bowl on Saturday.
Wairarapa United came from 1-0 down to draw 1-1 but manager Phil Keinzley was anything but happy with them sharing the spoils.
"Our finishing was terrible. I'd hate to think how many goals we butchered," he said. "We probably should have had five or six goals so to get only one was very disappointing. We monopolised possession but did very little with it."
Island Bay United scored the only goal of the first half very much against the run of play and the sole second half goal came from Wairarapa United's Pita Rabo. The local side failed to take advantage of Island Bay United having a player sent off early in the second half although that situation was evened up about 10 minutes from fulltime when their own midfielder Mirek Tvaroh, ironically making his last appearance for the season, was sent from the field as well.
"There were a few niggles but generally the game was played in a good spirit, there certainly wasn't a lot of foul play" Keinzley said.
Carl Shailer had a strong game on defence for Wairarapa United as did goalkeeper Tony Jamieson and Aaron Spierling.
"We defended pretty well but just couldn't get things going on attack, hardly anything went right there" Keinzley said.
Adding to the disappointment of the draw for Wairarapa United was that it meant they now have no chance of snaring the second spot on the premier division points table. They still have two catch up games to play but even if they win them both third is the best they can do.
