Wairarapa United is already being touted as a leading contender for the Capital division one men's soccer title this season but the next two weekends will either confirm or deny that billing.
Tomorrow they are at home to Wellington United, the team with whom they currently share the competition lead, and on Anzac Monday they will square up to Western Suburbs, another of the more favoured sides.
"We've got two toughies in as many weeks so we'll have a better gauge of where we stand after that,"coach Phil Keinzley said. "It would be nice to think we'll come up with two wins but it won't be easy."
Keinzley actually finds himself in an unusual situation going into tomorrow's match
Invariably he has had to cope with injuries and unavailabilities when naming his sides but the only player missing this time will be promising youngster Aaron Spierling, who has a groin problem which is expected to sideline him for two weeks.
"Apart from Aaron everybody is on deck??..it's not a luxury you have very often," Keinzley said."But it means there will no excuses for not playing well, none at all."
Such is the depth of talent in the Wairarapa United squad, in fact, that the coach intends to use a rotation system tomorrow, the idea being to allow most squad members a decent share of actual game time.
"We're fortunate to have a strong bench and it makes sense to take advantage of it," he said.
Keinzley wants his side to concentrate on playing their own style of soccer rather than concerning themselves over what the opposition might do.
He expects Wellington United to be a well-rounded side with skilful players on both attack and defence but is confident of his own team measuring up to them all over the pitch.
"We have to back our own quality to be better than theirs,it's as simple as that," he said. " We have to believe that if we play well then they are going to have to produce something special to beat us."
