Wairarapa United rocketed from fourth to second on the Capital Soccer premier division points table with their 4-0 win over Lower Hutt City at Lower Hutt on Saturday.
They now share that spot with Island Bay United, both teams sitting on 15 points, four less than Tawa and two more than fourth placed Waterside-Karori.
Their latest victory was memorable on several counts. It came at the same time as Andy Robertson set a new record for the club by making 60 consecutive appearances for their top team and on the day Fijian Sakeo Valevou was playing his 50 th game for them.
The absence through injury of star midfielder Mierek Tuaroh also added to its value while also missing was promising youngster Anton Ross.
Brought into the starting line-up from the Wairarapa United seconds was Paul Gregory and he marked his debut by scoring one of his team's four goals and coming every close to another.
Coach Phil Keinzley was the sole reserve and actually came onto the field as a replacement for James Oxtoby with 25 minutes of play remaining and Wairarapa United ahead 3-0.
That decision , which Keinzley admits to keeping a secret from wife Fae who was amongst the spectators for fear of an instant divorce, was made to allow Oxtoby more time to get back to Wanganui for his own engagement party. It was five years since Keinzley had worn the Wairarapa United colours and from what he could recall that effort had come for similar reasons.
"I reckoned we were far enough ahead for even a big lump like myself not to spoil things but it did mean a few others had to lift their games to cover for me," Keinzley quipped
Three of the Wairarapa United goals, two of them by Seule Soromon and the other by Gregory, came during a first half in which Wairarapa United were clearly superior. They dominated possession and territory with the in-form Soromon being given aple opportunity to impose his speed and flair on the opposition defences.
The second half saw Wairarapa United continue to call the tune although the only rewards for their efforts then was a Pita Rabo goal.
Keinzley said Saturday's result left Wairarapa United in a strong position to challenge for the premier division title."It's up to us to keep on winning, that's all there is to it," he said.
"It's now in our hands, the carrot is there and it's a matter of whether we grab it or not.".
The Wairarapa Uniited seconds lost their Capital third division match to Lower Hutt City 3-1 at the Pugh Sports Bowl on Saturday with Keinzley conceding that Gregory's promotion to his squad had done nothing to help their cause.
He said the injury to Tuaroh would very probably see Gregory remain with the premier division side and therefore there was an urgent need for one or two local league players to make themselves available for the Wairarapa United seconds.
"This is their chance to help us out and hopefully they will take it," he said.
