Army Unimogs are distributing donated bread, milk, soup and water, to north Otago residents cut off by flooding.
Waitaki Civil Defence spokesman Scott Ridley said 49 local roads remained impassable and it was fortunate the Unimogs were handy.
The supplies were donated by the local Countdown supermarket.
Showers are forecast to continue today and tomorrow, but Mr Ridley said no fresh problems are expected as river levels are dropping.
There are yet more flooded-road woes in south Otago, with State Highway 1 remaining closed in and out of Oamaru.
The main highway is also closed at Milton, to allow for the recovery of a truck and trailer unit that skidded and jack knifed. It is thought sleety conditions caused a vehicle in front of the truck to lose control and then the truck and trailer unit also crashed.
Sergeant Mark Gill said police were waiting on cranes and other equipment to help remove the truck and it is likely the road will remain closed until about 3:30 this afternoon.
The main trunk rail line is also closed between Otago and Southland due to flooding at Taieri, just south of Dunedin.
