Selector Warren Wyeth is expecting a strong effort from his Wairarapa senior men's outdoor bowls team at their inter-centre tournament in Palmerston North on Sunday.
While Wyeth accepts Wairarapa will go in as underdogs against opposition from Hawkes Bay, Manawatu and Gisborne-East Coast, he believes they have the experience and skill to make a bold bid for the title.
"It will all come down to consistency, if we play to our potential in every game we are a big chance," Wyeth said.
"Our guys have handled this type of pressure before, they know what they need to do."
Ian Monaghan, who won his 41st centre title last weekend, will play the singles for Wairarapa while Les O'Donovan will skip Warren Fisher in the pairs. The fours will see John Claydon at skip with Wairarapa centre president Pedro McGillicuddy at three, Graeme Tindall at two and talented junior Scott MacKenzie at lead.
Most of those players will also be involved when Masterton represents Wairarapa in the inter-zone club final on Saturday against the top club sides from the other three provinces. Monaghan will play the singles there, Claydon will skip Fisher in the pairs and making up the four will be Tindall at skip, Dennis Richards at three, Warren Wyeth at two and MacKenzie at lead.
