Wairarapa under-18 boys hockey coach Warwick Yeo was pleased with the improvement shown by his side during a tournament played at Stratford over the weekend.
In four matches Wairarapa had one win, one draw and two losses to finish a creditable third in what was their first appearance of the season.
Their opening game saw Wairarapa go down 2-1 to a Taranaki invitation side consisting mainly of older players. Yeo said his side were guilty of making a couple of costly defensive errors while not taking their own scoring chances at the other end of the field. "We made their goalkeeper look a lot better than he was," he said.
Wairarapa competed strongly for most of their game against Manawatu but went off the boil for a period of about 10 minutes and Manawatu capitalised, scoring the only three goals of the match then.
The attacking potential of the Wairarapa side was realised in their match with Wellington B.They scored 10 goals while conceding just one and dominated their opposition in every department.
Their final game saw Wairarapa demonstrate their fighting qualities by coming from 0-2 down to Hawke's Bay to draw 2-2.
Standout players for Wairarapa over the tournament were the Prendergasts, Wills and Olly, Jay Hodgkiss, Rowan Yeo, Matthew Tocker and Kurt Goodin.
The main objective for the Wairarapa this season is the national under-18 tourney to be played in Dunedin next month.
