Finishing runners-up to Manawatu at the Cook Osborne tournament at Paraparaumu on Sunday continued a rich vein of form for the Wairarapa under-17 netball team.
It followed hard on the heels of their success at the Marj Jenden tourney played at Porirua just a fortnight previous.
Their 19-9 defeat in the final on this occasion was no disgrace for the Manawatu team contained a number of players who are part of the national secondary schools squad.
Wairarapa also had the disadvantage of having played back to game games before the decider whereas Manawatu were fortunate that their schedule involved one less game than Wairarapa.
Coach Marion Tulloch was pleased, however, with the manner in which her side stuck to their task in the final although she conceded that tiredness did have an effect on their performance "It was a tough day for them and they were pretty well out on their feet," she said.
Wairarapa won all four of their section games, the first of them a 17-11 win over Wellington A.
From the first whistle a Wairarapa win was set up by centre Logan Karaitiana who pulled off four intercepts in as many minutes
And such was the sustained pressure exerted by Sarah McKenzie, Ella Biggs and Harriet Somerville at the other end of the court Wellington were forced to change their shooting combination but to no avail.
Goal shoot Sophie Ross was in scintillating form in their second game against Hastings , constantly creating space in the circle and netting 19 of the 23 goals scored by her side.
Lisa Morriss at wing defence took some timely intercepts and Milly Bell at goal keep and Ella Biggs at goal defence made life difficult for the Hastings shooters. Wairarapa won 23-7.
It was captain Pip Lynch at wing attack and Harriet Somerville at centre who took the eye in Wairarapa';s 22-10 win over Manawatu B.
They combined well to provide quality ball to shooters Hope Phillips and Sophie Ross who between them missed just four goals. Somerville was especially effective with her midcourt defence, creating several turnovers.
The last game in section play against Kapiti was played immediately after the Manawatu B game.
The defensive pressure exerted by the whole Wairarapa team through the court saw Wairarapa turn over a lot of ball with Kapiti scoring just the one goal in the first half and none in he second.
Wairarapa, on the other hand, had goal attack Abby Hull and goal shoot Sophie Ross netting goals at will while goal defence Ella Biggs and goal keep Sarah McKenzie picked up a number of rebounds at their end of the court.
Also impressing with their high workrate were wing defence Harriet Somerville and midcourters Pip Lynch and Logan Karaitiana. Wairarapa won by a handsome 20-1.
Wairarapa's next tournament is this coming Sunday at Palmerston North.
