Wairarapa United's 12th grade football team have finished the 2009 season on a high note, winning the plate final of their Capital Soccer competition .
They came up against North Wellington at Petone in the decider last Saturday and ran out 2-1 winners.
It was North Wellington, which weres Wairarapa United's first opponent in preliminary round play in the plate section, and a close, exciting match evolved there as well with a 2-2 draw the result.
Second up Wairarapa United met Island Bay and an effort labelled by team management as "flat" saw them lose 2-0.
Victory over Onslow in game three was therefore vital to keep Wairarapa United in finals contention and they responded brilliantly, winning 6-1 after it was 1-1 at halftime
Wairarapa United's 2-1 victory over Lower Hutt in a hard-fought game four, which could have gone either way, was of special significance as it gave them enough points to earn promotion to the premier grade in their age group next year, a marvellous achievement.
It was followed by another important win, this time 2-0 over Miramar Rangers, a result which ensured Wairarapa United qualified for the final against North Wellington
This was always likely to be a battle to the end and so it proved with neither team managing to score in the first half and North Wellington taking a 1-0 advantage 10 minutes into the second
Wairarapa United, however, struck back quickly with a goal just three minutes later, Josh Sami netting from a corner, and just as extra time beckoned they scored what was to be the winning goal. It too came from a corner with the scorer on this occasion being Jadyn Fabling-Stone.
This Sunday will see the Wairarapa United squad return to Petone for the prize-giving ceremony where they will be given certificates and medals marking their success.
