Uncle avoids conviction over tot's driveway death

Kronos Grosney died after he was run over in a driveway accident. His great-uncle has appeared in court.

A South Auckland man charged over the death of an 18-month-old boy in a driveway has been discharged without conviction.

George Mahanga, 57, appeared in Manukau District Court today after sentencing for the death of his great-nephew, Kronos Gosney, was adjourned last month.

Mahanga, driving a 4WD, hit the 18-month-old boy as he reversed out a South Auckland driveway.

Kronos' father, Matthew Woller, previously supported Mahanga in court. He tried to join Mahanga in the dock, but court security staff stopped him.

"They've got the wrong guy," he said, before returning to his seat.

Following the outburst, Judge Phillip Recordon adjourned the matter and apologised to media present for not being able to explain what was happening.

Today, Judge Recordon discharged Mahanga without conviction.
