KEY POINTS:
A police constable at the centre of an arrest of two teenagers who allegedly shot at officers from a stolen car has described the ordeal as "intense".
The Tauranga constable, who has been on the job only two years and was unarmed at the time, yesterday told the Herald that the danger he had been in did not sink in until he went to work the next night.
The officer would not comment further while the matter was before the courts but he and a fellow constable have been praised as "nothing short of heroic" for their dramatic arrest of the armed 14-year-olds early Sunday.
The two boys were remanded in custody after appearing in the Tauranga Youth Court yesterday morning on multiple charges, including attempted murder and using a firearm against police.
The pair allegedly fired shots from a .303 hunting rifle at the two officers during an 8km chase that ended in Mt Maunganui.
Once stopped, one of the boys allegedly pointed the gun at the officers, who were forced to retreat.
The boy then allegedly tried to steal a police vehicle, but he and his companion were overpowered by the two constables and a police dog.
