Red Star cricket captain Joe Hull is due to leave on his OE to England next week but says he won't mind if he has to delay his departure a few days.
It's a decision which will depend on his team's showing in their Umpires Cup semi-final match with Flight Centre Lansdowne at Queen Elizabeth Park Oval tomorrow, or maybe Sunday if the weather intervenes.
Red Star have won the limited-overs title for the last two years and Hull "very definitely" intends to be part of the following weekend's final if the semi-final result goes their way.
"The trip can wait a few days if that happens, it would be nice to make it three on end," he said.
Hull does concede, however, that Red Star will be the underdogs with Flight Centre Lansdowne having won the Bidwell Cup two-day final last weekend and being chockful of players who have played at senior level for Wairarapa this season.
And having two of their best performers with bat and ball, Brad Edwards and Jared Watt, not available doesn't exactly help the Red Star cause either.
Hull knows that one or two outstanding individual efforts can decide a limited-overs game and he is looking for the likes of himself, Daniel Stonely or Troy Burling to shine with the bat and Peter Sigvertsen and Aaron Wilson likewise with the ball.
"We do have players who can take a game by the scruff of the neck and if they fire then we're with a big chance," he said.
Lansdowne, for their part, will be looking for big hitters in Henry Cameron and Sam Curtis to lead their batting onslaught and for Robin James, Mark Scully and Dane Buchanan to cause havoc in the bowling ranks.
They won't though have the services of all-rounder Brock Price because of the clash with the earlier-than-usual start of the club rugby season, something which, quite rightly, has caused frustration amongst the cricketing community.
The other Umpires Cup semi-final tomorrow sees Greytown at home to Rathkeale College and the form book suggests a Greytown team which will be hugely strengthened by the return of Seth Rance should have the edge.
Rance missed the Bidwell Cup final because of his elevation into the Central Districts Stags which drew with Wellington and on a batter-friendly Napier pitch he could feel well pleased with his efforts, both with bat and ball.
Greytown will also have taken encouragement from the solid batting of old hands Mark Childs, Josh Doherty and Wal Tatham in the Bidwell Cup final and all three will be expected to score well again.
Rathkeale College have not had the most consistent of club seasons but in the likes of Matt Stringfellow and Jamie Holmes they have some talented youngsters in their ranks and it wouldn't pay to discount them completely.
