Wairarapa-Bush under-20s made it two from two in their Hurricanes rugby competition when they beat their highly-regarded Wanganui counterparts 27-15 in the curtain-raiser match at Memorial Park, Masterton on Saturday.
It was a winning margin which spoke volumes for the home side as Wanganui had a big, mobile pack and a lively set of backs who were willing to attack from all parts of the paddock.
The difference between the two teams though was that whereas Wairarapa-Bush generally made the most of their scoring opportunities Wanganui often faltered when the goalline beckoned, invariably through players going it alone and neglecting unmarked teammates.
Wairarapa-Bush, on the other hand, placed the emphasis on teamwork with forwards and backs combining well in their many attacking forays.
Fullback Nick Olson scored both of the Wairarapa-Bush tries and was always a danger whenever he got his hands on the ball. He showed both speed and elusiveness. Jordan Watene again looked promising in midfield and Callum Buchanan was a resourceful halfback.
In the forwards Wairarapa-Bush was splendidly served by loosies Mike Wilson and Lee Ewe, whose running skills were outstanding, while lock Tom Scott and prop Kurt Simmonds were grand value in the tighter exchanges
Olson scored two tries for Wairarapa-Bush and Logan Uys kicked five penalties and one conversion.
